INTEGRATED MARITIME POLICY AT THE HEART OF THE
EU 2020 STRATEGY
Maria Damanaki is the European Commissioner in charge of Maritime
Affairs and Fisheries. She attended the first public hearing at
the European Parliaments Seas and Coastal Areas Intergroup
chaired by its President Corinne Lepage (ALDE-FR). The CPMR wishes
to be involved in the implementation of the EU Integrated Maritime
policy (IMP) and it is ready to work close to the Commission in
order to offer its know-how on the ground to bring the IMP to
the at the heart of the EU 2020 strategy.
Commissioner Damanaki counts on the regions own
expertise for inspiration in policy making and trusts
regional stakeholders will make their voices heard in support
of the Commission's financing proposal for the period 2011
2013.
Enrico Mayrhofer: The first EU action plan on an integrated maritime
policy has drawn to a close. How do you plan to involve the regions
in the next step, and in carrying out the priorities that you
have announced?
Maria Damanaki: The first action plan has opened a still strongly
ongoing process, and indeed several of the actions foreseen in
the plan will have to be progressively implemented over the next
few years, while others simply require steady commitment (for

TONDO: MACRO REGIONAL SYNERGIES TO TACKLE GLOBALISATION
On 13 April 2010 the Committee of the Regions (CoR) organised
a Forum on Macro Regions to reaffirm that European integration
also needs territorial cooperation. Many distinguished participants
were present at the meeting, including the Commissioner for Regional
Policy, Johannes Hahn, and various regional representatives from
macro areas such as the Baltic, the North Sea, the Danube or the
Mediterranean.
The Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) has a vast
experience in this field since it is the only organisation that
is divided by geographical areas and not thematic ones. Gunn Marit
Helgesen, County Mayor of Telemark in Norway, was there in her
capacity as representative of the CPMR North Sea Commission, while
Secretary General, Eleni Marianou, gave a general overview of
the strategies that may constitute better opportunities for post-2013
cohesion policy.
Renzo Tondo, President of the Italian Region of Friuli Venezia
Giulia participated in the final debate alongside the vice-president
of the Committee of the Regions, Ramón Luis Valcárcel
Siso (Murcia ES), who was also hosting the event. President
Tondo, member of the CPMR, was there also in his capacity as President
of the Alps Adriatic Working Community, an initiative which was
launched way before the Berlin wall collapsed and whose main objective
is cooperation between 12 Regions of Italy, Austria, Slovenia,
Hungary and Croatia. During the Forum, the Alps Adriatic Community
also sponsored a painting exhibition of artists who come from
those countries with the objective of underlining that dialogue
is also art...
