THE REGION OF PUGLIA HAS BEEN HIT HARD BY THE CRISIS
Silvia Godelli, Regional Minister for the Mediterranean for Puglia
region (IT), explains how her region has been coping with the
economic crisis.
For our region, an alternative policy aiming to kick-start
issues related to energy supply is of the utmost importance; by
doing so we can move forward and emerge from this crisis by integrating
energy policies on renewables and giving a new thrust to our region
and by safeguarding biodiversity and the specific characteristics
of the Euro-Mediterranean area.
According to Ms Godelli certain sectors, such as energy, were
able to cope better with the crisis thanks to investments and
measures that had already been implemented, following the example
of the measures which have made Puglia the number one region in
Italy for the production of renewable energy, particularly wind
power.

GÖTEBORG: ECONOMIC CRISIS, COPENHAGEN TALKS
AND APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW SECRETARY GENERAL
On 2 October 2009, while Irish people will be voting on the Lisbon
Treaty, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) will
meet in its General Assembly at the invitation of Roland ANDERSSON,
President of the Regional Executive Board of Västra Götaland
in Sweden.
The global economic crisis will be at the core of discussions
during this Assembly held in Goteborg. Indeed, a presentation
of the CPMRs reflection on the impact of the crisis on European
regions and on the measures they have taken to tackle it, will
highlight our territories current economic situation, and will
also demonstrate the differences among our regions. Hopefully
some initial lessons for the future will emerge from the discussions
and above all, some concrete measures related to the expertise
within our territories will be presented to the Commission and
Parliament.

HOW CULTURE IN EUROPE'S RURAL REGIONS COULD BE
CELEBRATED AND HARNESSED FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
The European Regions of Culture Project is calling for a new
award for rural regions: European Regions of Culture (EROC). Just
as the European Capital of Culture celebrates urban European living,
our goal is to harness rural culture to create a better, more
sustainable future for rural, isolated and peripheral regions
individually, collectively and in Europe as a whole.
This event is to appeal to the Regions who want to join the network
of rural European Regions of Culture and become part of the next
innovative EROC intercultural exchange project, to debate the
culture-led celebration and regeneration manifest in rural isolated
and peripheral regions. It will be an opportunity to hear European
experts speaking about culture, to meet cultural representatives
from other rural regions and exchange experiences and to see the
creative work produced during the projects artistic residency.
Among the speakers, Ann Branch, Head of Unit, Culture Programme
and Actions, DG Education and Culture, EC and Shelagh Wright,
Demos will attend the event.

ALLIANCE OF ATLANTIC REGIONS TO EXPLORE ATLANTIC STRATEGY CONCEPT
Open Days, the week of Cities and Regions, will host a seminar
entitled: In search of a Framework for Cooperation in the
Atlantic Area organised by the Atlantic Alliance consortium
of regions. This seminar is very timely following the launch of
the Baltic Sea Strategy and after the CPMR has initiated a campaign
for an Atlantic Arc Maritime Strategy.
Europes Atlantic regions across Ireland, UK, France, Spain
and Portugal have been working together for many years, facilitated
more recently by EU Territorial Cooperation programmes, notably
the Atlantic Area programme, in policy fields such as fisheries,
transport, energy, ports and marine research. The seminar will
reflect on lessons learnt through this cooperation and will seek
to address a number of questions including:
What has been the impact of trans-national funding in
the Atlantic Area in fostering cooperation in the past and what
role can it play in the future?
How can the most effective interaction between Territorial
Cohesion and Integrated Maritime Policy be assured?
How can regions in the Atlantic Area best advance the application
of maritime spatial planning in the EU and what are the barriers
to an integrated approach?
Is the EUs Atlantic seaboard a viable space to develop
a future framework for cooperation? ...
