AMBITIOUS STEPS FOR THE EU INTEGRATED MARITIME
POLICY
This brainstorming on the future of integrated maritime
policy is the recognition of the critical role of Europes
maritime Regions in building up the maritime policy. stated
Joe Borg, EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs at an informal
meeting organised in Fajal (Azores-PT) by CPMR on 6th of July.
I cannot imagine he added - the future
development of this policy without the active contribution of
those who - like the maritime Regions - know better the challenges
and opportunities offered to the EU by our oceans and seas.
In response to this, CPMRs Regions underlined that the
EU maritime action plan has accomplished what it set out to achieve
and should serve as a preparatory phase for a more ambitious policy,
especially from 2010 onwards and in particular for the next generation
of EU policies and instruments post-2013...

CPMR SURVEY ON THE REGIONS AND THE CRISIS
With a view to addressing the request of several CPMR Member
Regions to establish an exchange platform on the impact of the
current economic crisis on Regions, and the possibility for Regional
Authorities to take measures to mitigate this impact on citizens
and the local business community, the CPMR carried out an enquiry
to which 25 Regions have responded. The diversity of both the
socio-economic profile of these Regions and their institutional
pattern helps to present a broad sample of cases.
With the only exception of the Shetland Islands, the survey shows
that the economic recession has left no territory immune. The
impact has nevertheless been very different across Regions and
even between Regions of the same country, with Italian, Spanish,
English and some Scandinavian Regions to be apparently the most
affected among those concerned...

EUROPE LOOKS TO THE EAST
The « Joint Declaration of the Prague Eastern Partnership
Summit » was the focus of discussion on 11th June during
the CPMR Balkan and Black Sea Regional Commission in Odessa (Ukraine).
This Joint Declaration corresponds to a kind of European
Black Sea Strategy, that was ratified on 7th May 2009 by
all 27 EU Member States and the Caucasian States such as Belarus,
Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
This document was very welcomed by the CPMR members and in Odessa,
the CPMR Balkan and Black Sea Regional Commission that presented
its reaction to this ambitious declaration intending to accelerate
the political association and the economic integration between
the European Union and its Caucasian partners...

INNOVATION IN MIND - LUND CONFERENCE
The CPMR is a partner in the conference entitled Innovation in
Mind that will take place under the Swedish Presidency on 15 to
17 September 2009 in Lund (SE) with the support of Region Skåne,
the University of Lund and many other organisations.
This conference falls within the context of the Swedish Presidency
and the European year of creativity and innovation. It will focus
on the modern drivers of innovation in a global perspective and
special emphasis will be placed on issues such as user driven
innovation, open innovation and social and financial innovation.
The CPMRs involvement in this event is tied in with its
action on the territorial dimension of dynamics and policies in
support of innovation...
